The Alentejo region in Portugal is home to the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, which features stunning landscapes, charming seaside villages, and pristine beaches.
These beaches are known for their wild beauty and quiet surroundings. Despite its appeal, the Alentejo region is often overshadowed by the popular Algarve region found in the south. While the Algarve is beautiful, the Alentejo region is a great alternative for those seeking hidden beaches, quiet villages, and dramatic scenery.
Below are my top 11 picks for the most picturesque and serene beaches in the Alentejo region of Portugal. This list offers a healthy mix of hidden beaches that are challenging to reach, and beaches with easier access.

Beach Safety
While discovering these secluded beaches, it’s crucial to honor the natural surroundings and adhere to any local guidelines to maintain pristine coastal regions. Certain beaches may offer limited amenities, so it’s advisable to bring along any essentials. Additionally, many beaches on this list feature restricted access, often involving navigating steep inclines, which may not be suitable for everyone.
Below are some general recommendations for accessing untamed beaches in Portugal, particularly within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park:
- Certain areas may have restricted access to protect sensitive habitats and wildlife.
- Stick to designated paths and trails to minimize your impact on the natural surroundings. Avoid trampling on vegetation or disturbing wildlife.
- Practice the “Leave No Trace” principles by carrying out all waste, including litter.
- Some areas or beaches may be temporarily closed for conservation purposes. Respect any closures and follow alternative routes or recommendations provided.
- Be aware of local conditions, including tides and weather, to ensure your safety. Some remote beaches may lack facilities, so come prepared with essentials like water, snacks, and first aid supplies.
Please keep in mind that the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park is designated as a protected area, and visitors have an important role in preserving its ecological integrity. Always check for any updates or changes in regulations before planning your visit.
